US Men’s Soccer Team Wins First World Cup Match on American Soil in 30 Years Over Paraguay 4-1, With Fan Reactions on Social Media

Pre-Match Analysis

On Fri, Jun 12, the US Men’s national soccer team played in an opening match of the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. The U.S men’s team faced Paraguay in a Group D match that was the opening match on American soil in a tournament where the United States, Canada and Mexico serve as conjoined co-hosts of the biggest World Cup tournament ever.

With 48 countries qualifying for the 2026 Men’s World Cup, there are more matches for fans to watch and attend than any prior World Cup tournament. This World Cup is the fourth one ever played in the United States of America, which previously hosted the men’s side of the tournament in 1994 and hosted the Women’s World Cup in 1999 and 2003.

This U.S men’s team features returning players from the 2022 World Cup run in Qatar such as star midfielder Christian Pulisic, defenseman and captain of the squad Tim Ream and other skilled players on one of the youngest and most fresh rosters ever constructed for an American World Cup run. Led by Argentinian-born manager Mauricio Pochettino, the U.S men’s soccer team sought to open up this World Cup on home soil in style with a big statement on the grass pitch in an open-air stadium.

Social Media Posts & Commentary from First Half of Match

The match got off to an electrifying start, as an early opportunity presented itself as the U.S side wearing their red-striped uniforms took advantage of poor defense played near the goal on the eastern side of the pitch by the Paraguayan defenders. Pulisic kicked the ball into the penalty box and passed the ball to fellow midfielder Weston McKennie, who kicked the ball forward and it went off the foot of a Paraguayan midfielder and it trickled past their goalkeeper into the net. It was an own goal that served as the first goal of the tournament for the Americans. This occurred in the seventh minute of action and video footage of the goal is provided below in an X post by FOX Sports.

After a mandatory hydration break in the middle of the first half, the Americans decided to score on their own volition as forward Folarin Balogun scored in the 31st minute of action off a timely assist by Pulisic. This game was starting to swing into the favor of the U.S, which held a 2-0 lead over Paraguay. A Reddit user named Fizzles86 made a good comment summarizing the second score of the game for Team USA, saying “Paraguay is stunned by the commercial break and gives up a goal within five minutes.”

For the record, FIFA has implemented a new policy mandating that hydration breaks must be taken around the midway point of each half in this World Cup and that gives the televised broadcasts the opportunity to implement roughly three-minute commercial breaks.

Near the end of the first half, with additional stoppage time, the U.S decided to give Balogun a chance to score a second goal and he did not hesitate as he controlled a down-pitch kick from one of his teammates and knocked the ball into the net with his left foot to put the U.S up 3-0. Posted below is a video taken by a fan who sat in a higher-level section of the venue of Balogun’s second goal and posted onto YouTube.

Halftime Analysis

The U.S men’s soccer team had successfully amassed a 3-0 lead over Paraguay in dominant fashion through one half of action. The fans of the U.S team were well pleased, as after a disappointing stretch of several years in major tournaments, a first half like this in their opening match of this World Cup that the men’s squad is playing exclusively on their home turf was the best possible thing they could ask for.

A Reddit user with the username stealth_sloth posted a good comment summarizing the first half by saying “If you’d asked me 45 minutes ago about the absolute best way I could envision this tournament starting for us… it would’ve been basically what we just got. Pulisic playing with a ton of poise and confidence, Balogun proving that he really does pose a serious goalscoring threat, US players all over the field showing an instinctive awareness of their teammates, a clear game plan the guys are executing well on, not getting pushed around when it comes to physical confrontations, and of course the score is great.”

Social Media Commentary & Posts from Second Half of Match

The second half of the match featured a more even possession split between both teams, with Paraguay getting lucky to score a goal in the 71st minute by a young midfielder named Mauricio. But the Americans did not allow another goal to be scored by the Paraguayans for the rest of the match and in the seven minutes of stoppage time, the game was basically over. But that didn’t stop the United States from scoring one more time and subbed-in midfielder Giovanni Reyna casually kicked a ball towards the net and it went in for a game-ending goal. Fox Sports’ YouTube channel shows replay angles of Reyna’s goal below.

With this 4-1 victory, the Americans are off to a fantastic start to their 2026 World Cup run. Leading Group B with three early points and a +3 goal margin, the U.S men’s soccer team will play their next group stage game against Australia on Fri, Jun 19 in Seattle. Their last group stage game will be against Turkiye on Thur, Jun 25 back in Southern California, where the fans wearing red, white and blue showed up and witnessed an incredible performance from this team of young and athletic footballers looking to accomplish the impossible dream of winning the first-ever World Cup in U.S men’s soccer history.
